Second Life (3D Virtual World) BIG Changes
http://blogs.secondlife.com
Mega changes in the last few months :
          - The Teen Grid (13-18) is closing .. walled garden options in the main grid an alternative
          - The lower age limit for the main grid is changing from 18 to 16
          - The cost of an education SIM is doubling from 1 Jan 2011 (US$3,400/year) update

International Schools Island consists of two full SIMS and one 'cut down' SIM called a Homestead ... I plan to close one of the full SIMS (isi2) but keep the others going.

I made his decision before the price increases ... the main reason being that I'm venturing into other virtual worlds to evaluate their usefulness in teaching and learning ... we are now spoilt for choice ... Second Life is not the only option. But I'm still aware that for the near future that the largest community of educators is still in Second Life and for me it is "The Community" that is of paramount importance.

Interesting times ... and if you want to see Shamblesguru "The Avatar' dancing then watch this youtube video/machinima ... but be warned . it is not a pretty sight. ;-) ... dancing in a virtual world ... weird eh? (yes I have gone a little crazy ... where are the virtual avatars in white coats?)

item one iPads and other iDevices (and Apps) www.shambles.net/ict/#mobile

It is quite a sobering thought that when the last Shambles newsletter was published was when the Apple iPad was just being released to the world ... six months ago ... and so much has happened in that six months.
I am convinced that the new tablet devices, with their instant-on button, there 10 hour battery life, affordable Apps and light weight, will now make 1:1 scheme a practical reality. I do so admire all the pioneering teachers and students whohave embarked on the 1:1 journey in the last few years ... with hardware that has been fighting them rather than supporting.
I've always been a strong 1:1 supporter ... and now with the new hardware and software I really do think that there will be a major shift in learning ... in just the next two years.
Interesting times to take such a journey ...

New area on Shambles for everything mobile shambles.net/ict/#mobile

I've done several presentations related to the iPad and Apps including some in Second Life ... which prompted me to set up a permanent exhibition and meeting area in Second Life ...

item one  Twitter (holic) & Hashtag Addict shambles.net/pages/learning/ict/whereru

Twitter is still ignored by some educators as perceived as a potential time waster of trivia .... BUT TRUST ME ... Twitter can be a VERY powerful tool for educators if used in the right way.
As an example ... even if you do not have a Twitter account ... for anyone interested in educational technology view this Twitter stream http://tweetchat.com/room/edtech and watch it for a few minutes ... then you decide.

Twitter Flash (Hashtag) Meetings www.shambles.net/pages/learning/infolit/tagging
It sounds crazy ... a gaggle of educators get together online for an hour each week ... and just twitter like crazy about a theme (voted for on Twitter) ... it is like being at a party of hundred plus people all talking about the same topic ... more crazyiness? The trick is to know what hashtag to use and to practice your party conversation skills. See the videos/screencasts at the above url for more info ... initially bewildering ... eventually informing. (mmm .. good t-shirt logo)

#Edchat: Join the Conversation http://edchat.pbworks.com
"The purpose of this site is to convert the inspiring and thought-provoking discussion from the weekly Twitter #edchat into real change.
Open, collaborative, focused discussion can open and expand minds. But let's not stop there- let's harness this wisdom of the many to crowdsource possible solutions to some of the major issues that are uncovered...
In practice what does all this mean ... it means that every Tuesday we host 2 Edchat conversations on Twitter at 12pm EST/ 5pm GMT and 7pm EST/ 12pm GMT.
To view the conversation use a Twitter search App and search for the hash tag #edchat
To take part just Tweet as normal and add the tag #edchat to your Tweet.
It's a bit like having an online conversation in the school lunch hall ... but there are alway great resources and links flying around.
"
More informaaton at teacherbootcamp

Education Related Hashtags www.shambles.net/pages/learning/infolit/tagging
Just a few .... (trust me ... hashtags ARE powerful tools)
#artsed | #BlackEd | #Blogchat | #cpchat Connected Principals | CUAD (College Unions & Activities Discussion) | DistEd (e-learning College) | #ecosys (Change in Public Ed) | #edadmin | #edchat | #edtech | #elemchat | #ellchat | #ELTchat | #engchat | #gtchat Gifted and Talented | #hsc (Homeschool) | #innochat (Innovation) | #journchat (Journalists) | #kedu (Kindergarten) | #kinderchat | #lrnchat (Learning) | #mathchat | #midleved (Middle School) | #musedchat | #ntchat (New Teacher) | #onecom (One Comment) | #PATeach (Pennsylvania Teachers) | #ptchat (Parent-Teacher) | #SAChat (Student Affairs) | #schoolprchat | #scichat | #SGAchat | #smchat (Social Media) | #spedchat (Special Ed) | #sschat | #teacher-librarian | #titletalk (Librarians - Books) | #tweatre | #ukedchat | #web20chat |

Twitter Fun screenr.com/R14
There are still some fun aspects of Twitter that have absolutely no practical use ... for example this Japan-based website provides a graphical representation of my Twitter followers following me in a parade ... I smile whenever I think of it .. very cleverly done.

International Technology in Education Mark (ITEM) www.naace.co.uk/item
The International Technology in Education Mark (ITEM) is a whole-school Technology accreditation for schools throughout the world launched in 2010.
Accredited by Naace, the professional association for educators interested in advancing education through ICT, and an ISTE affiliate, ITEM uses a self-review framework which integrates with the NETS standards to produce a unique accreditation scheme suitable for international schools.
It enables schools to self-review their Technology provision across all areas of the school by setting out a structure of elements, strands and aspects to facilitate self-evaluation, benchmarking and action planning.
Who is ITEM intended for? ... ITEM is intended for schools worldwide where no whole-school accreditation scheme already exists that celebrates and confirms the role that Technology plays in establishing a 21st century learning institution.
How do I get started? .. Simple! Register here . You will then receive the framework, which is free for you to use.
Help and contacts ... There are two sets of frequently asked questions, one geared around the needs of schools and the other around the needs of service providers. Please email chris.stott@naace.co.uk for other queries.

Global ... Life in a Day http://www.youtube.com/lifeinaday
Back in July when people from all over the world participated in YouTube’s Life in a Day experiment. If not, let us refresh your memory. The experiment took place on July 24th and more than 80,000 videos were submitted. The point of the experiment was to capture a glimpse of participants’ lives on a single day throughout the planet.
Subsequently, thousands of videos poured in from 197 countries, and have made history by culminating in the world’s biggest user-generated film to date. YouTube has put together a Life in a Day channel and you can also explore many of individual videos in the gallery.
