How do young people cbehave in virtual libraries?
http://tinyurl.com/3b7ffg
How do young people currently behave in virtual libraries?
The Google Generation as researchers (pdf) Jan2008
Information behaviour of the researcher of the future
This study was commissioned by the British Library and JISC to identify how the specialist researchers of the future, currently in their school or pre-school years, are likely to access and interact with digital resources in five to ten years’ time.
This is to help library and information services to anticipate and react to any new or emerging behaviours in the most effective way. In this report, we define the `Google generation’ as those born after 1993 and explore the world of a cohort of young people with little or no recollection of life before the web.

Libraries providing online Reference Services
http://tinyurl.com/zduye
List of Libraries providing online Reference Services
This list is for libraries with some form of synchronous or chat reference services.
An exhaustive list of libraries offering other virtual reference services is nowadays akin to a list of libraries that offer telephone service; to search the thousands of library sites which employ e-mail links or simple web feedback forms, see Libweb (http://lists.webjunction.org/libweb/).
Groups of libraries broader than the individual institutions (individual libraries, libraries within the same university system, or public library county branch system) are shown in bold.
Listed by country, state, and then alphabetically by institution (or service name for cooperatives). Vendor information and other notes are listed when possible.

The 2003 School Library Profiles (USA)
http://www.lrs.org/asp_school/profiles03/index.asp
The 2003 School Library Profiles
The School Library Profiles developed by the Library Research Service are meant to be used as a comparative tool for school libraries in Colorado. The results represent data received from school libraries that completed the 2003 Colorado School Library Survey. Profiles for each participating school compare individual school data with averages for schools with similar grade level and enrollment ranges. Please note that since all data were derived from responses to the survey, schools that did not respond to the survey are not represented in the Profiles.
Use the school locator (below) to find the school for which you would like to see the 2003-2004 School Library Profile. Remember, schools that did not respond to the 2003 Colorado School Library Survey will not be represented in the Profiles.

International Children's Digital Library ICDL
http://www.icdlbooks.org/
International Children's Digital Library ICDL
The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) is a 5-year research project to develop innovative software and a collection of books that specifically address the needs of children as readers. Interdisciplinary researchers from computer science, library studies, education, art, and psychology are working together with children to design this new library. With participants from around the world, the ICDL is building an international collection that reflects both the diversity and quality of children's literature. In 2002, the collection included materials donated from 27 cultures in 15 languages.
The International Children's Digital Library is a place where kids all over the world can find lots of books from many different countries. It's a place where kids can read as much as they want without having to pay a lot of money or travel very far to find the books. If you have a computer and access to the Internet, you can see books from places like Croatia, Egypt, Japan, New Zealand, the United States and more!

Not Your Parents' Library
http://www.techlearning.com/db_area/archives/TL/2002/09/library.html
In May 2002, we examined how technology has transformed the role school librarians now play in the classroom and community. Here, we shine a light on best practices and projects.
At Scarsdale High School in Westchester County, N.Y., school librarian Phyllis DiBianco and English teacher Natalie Farina have teamed up to teach women's history in a unique fashion-by studying old clothing advertisements from the 19th century. But instead of turning to reels of microfiche, as they would have a decade ago, the two educators are taking advantage of the Library of Congress American Memory Web site.

School Libraries Online
Principle 7 of the United Nations declaration on the Rights of the Child states: "the child is entitled to receive education which shall be free and compulsory, at least in the elementary stages. He shall be given an education which will promote his general culture, and enable him on a basis of equal opportunity to develop his abilities, his individual judgement, and his moral sense of social responsibility, and to become a useful member of society" (1).
The existence and utilization of the school library is a vital part of this free and compulsory education. The school library is essential to "the development of the human personality as well as the spiritual, moral, social, cultural and economic progress of the community" (2).
