item one Shambles "What's New"

I am in the middle of putting the "ShareThis" button on most of the Shambles pages in order to help visitors share across the social web ..... click on the link on the right to see how it works.
If you have a website or Blog yourself then you might like to consider this free App.

Downloading (YouTube+) Videos :
I've created a new area called "downloading online videos" .. these links used to be scattered around Shambles .. all now in one place

Shambles in Teachers TV Top Ten List :
I was really chuffed when told that Shambles was included in a (UK) Teachers TV 'Top Ten' list .... see the 15 min video.

Obama Government Online :
You may have noticed that there is a new USA President ... and the guy appears to be much more IT savvy than those previously in the job ... this new area on Shambles lists (present and future) ICT initiatives that he is responsible for. (Best Wishes to the new administration).

The Periodic Table(s) :
A new page of Periodic Tables for the Scientists ... there used to be a few scattered around Shambles ... now a serious collection all in one place.

item two International Schools Island

International Schools Island continues to grow ... in Second Life, the 3D online virtual world.
I've run more presentations in-world since the last newsletter and feel I've now moved from "novice virtual educator" to "now having fun" .... and learning even more from other residents.
- Blog :
- SLurl :

Educators Use of S.L. (2008 Survey) :
In May of 2008, the NMC conducted its second annual survey of educators in Second Life, provided as a yearly snapshot of the demographics and activities of educators who are active in Second Life.

Data Visualisation:
I've been to several talks over the past few months about Data Visualisation (DV) in SL ... so decided to build a DV display/exhibition in Int.Schs.Island.
This project went a little further than I anticipated ... I also built a 3D graphing tool ... which I suspect may also have other teaching/learning uses rather than just DV ... it is free for you to take.
All in the lobby of the Technology Tower.

3rd Island Added with a Holodeck:
New SIM delivered to the International Schools Estate on 12 Dec 2008
In fact it's not a full SIM but called an OpenSpace ... same physical size but with less prims to build and some other restrictions ... but the monthly rental is cheaper than a full SIM.
From 5th January 2009 OpenSpaces were converted to what is being called "Homesteads" ... see details at
The Island has one main item on it .... a Holodeck
Click to join Second Life now ... it is free       Home page of International Schools Island (in Second Life) on the Shambles website   You need to already be a member of Second Life and Logged on in order to use this link to the International Schools Island You are already on this page international schools island calendar ... events in second life and in the real world you are already on the sponsored page so this link is not active international schools (k-12) group isi Blog recording the growth of an island

item five Plagiarism and Copyright

Plagiarism and Copyright has it's own page on the Shambles website; feedback suggested that it was not so easy to find teaching materials and urls for this topic.
I've had a spring clean and there are now two new areas on the page "Plagiarism and Copyright : Webquests" and "Plagiarism and Copyright : Teaching and Tutorial" ... hopefully this will make browsing a little more convenient.

Creative Commons
If you are not familiar with the "Creative Commons" method of copyrighting your work ... so it is clear what rights you are giving others to use your work ... then it would be time well spent visiting this webpage ... or view the videos.

Flickr Creative Commons
Many Flickr users have chosen to offer their work under a Creative Commons license, and you can browse or search through content under each type of license .... over 100,000,000 images.

Not to be confused with ...

Flickr Commons and
... "the world's public photo collections"
"The key goals of The Commons on Flickr are to firstly show you hidden treasures in the world's public photography archives, and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer."
The Historians should particularly like this collection.

Net threat to minors less than feared
Enhancing Child Safety and Online Technologies ... 31 December 2008
Final Report of the Internet Safety Technical Task Force to the Multi-State Working Group on Social Networking of State Attorneys General of the United States.
cNet News reported .... The task force conclusions included ...
"... actual threats that youth may face appear to be different than the threats most people imagine" and that "the image presented by the media of an older male deceiving and preying on a young child does not paint an accurate picture of the nature of the majority of sexual solicitations and Internet-initiated offline encounters."
... that children and teens are less vulnerable to sexual predation than many have feared.
The report also questions the efficacy and necessity of some commonly prescribed remedies designed to protect young people.
The task force was formed as a result of a joint agreement between MySpace and 49 state attorneys general.

Teachers TV
