Job descriptions for ICT technical support staff
There is a wide range of staff that schools are employing to support their ICT infrastructure. These range from classroom assistants to specialised network support technicians. The functions covered by these roles may vary from basic maintenance and support for teachers, to complex hardware installation and significant input into ICT strategy.
Becta have developed a framework of competences to guide schools in their decisions about the roles of ICT technical support staff. The framework divides each of the possible functions into a four levels. Details can be found here.
Many schools have requested practical guidance in creating ICT technical support job descriptions. We would prefer schools looked at the competency framework and used this as a basis. However, responding to past requests Becta has collated a range of example job descriptions from staff working in schools and in other support teams. These have been analysed and matched to level from the competences framework.

ACITT? model suggests a proper career structure for technical support assistants in schools within a set of nationally agreed job descriptions and salary scales. The ACITT document distributed at BETT, and reproduced here, describes a range of jobs in primary and secondary schools from junior non-technical posts right up to network managers of large networks in large schools. The principle adopted is that the more difficult the job becomes and the more complex the tasks that have to be performed, then the higher the rate of pay.

We have all used the device of explaining a concept or process in terms of everyday objects or mundane activities. I described formatting a disk to computer novices as painting the strips in a parking lot so cars know where to park. It is not correct in actual technical terms, but it helps a new computer user understand why formatting a disk is essential before data can be stored on it.
Participants at the Fall California CUE Conference Technology Coordinators' Preconference were asked to create similes or metaphors for being a technology coordinator. The creative responses shed light on the complex nature of technology coordinators; some used objects and others used animals, actions, or people to define the role.
