Type of Governors
There are various types of governors in school governing bodies, all of whom are volunteers. These include:
Parent governors – elected by other parents at the school.
Staff governors – elected by other members of staff at the school.
Authority governors – appointed by local authority.
Community / Co-opted governors – appointed by the governing body as representatives of the wider community in which the school is based.
Foundation governors – are appointed by the school’s foundation (voluntary aided, voluntary controlled and foundation schools only).
Partnership governors – appointed by the governing bodies (foundation schools and foundation special schools).

Categories and roles of school governors
School governors are one of the (UK) country's largest voluntary groups with around 300,000 contributing to strategic development and raising standards of achievement at more than 30,000 schools.
Individual governors have no power or right to act on behalf of the governing body except where the whole governing body has delegated a specific function to that individual or where regulations specify a function is to be exercised in a particular way.
