Sustainable Schools
http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/sustainableschools/
Sustainable Schools
The Sustainable Schools area of Teachernet is designed to support schools on their journey to sustainability, introducing the principles of sustainable development and offering guidance on how to embed these principles into the heart of school life.
The site provides useful information for all sectors of the school community, including the leadership team, the management team, teachers and parents, and offers a number of excellent online and downloadable tools (auditing, benchmarking, environmental assessment) to help schools identify the best route to becoming more sustainable.
The Sustainable Schools site is designed to help school managers and teachers to assess current practice, and to decide where to go next.
In the Tools section you can access a number of school improvement tools. These help schools assess current practice, identify areas for improvement, and begin the process of change.

21st Century Schools
http://www.buildingfutures.org.uk/pdfs/pdffile_32.pdf
21st Century Schools
This report voices some strong opinions and recommendations. Not everyone will agree with these, and some may find them challenging. Time will tell how many of them prove to be prescient, but in the meantime it is hoped this report will demonstrate that it may be hard to predict how our schools will be delivering teaching and learning even in ten years time. At the very least we need to be designing the school buildings of the future to be permissive rather than prescriptive - otherwise we could find ourselves having to embark on the next campaign of school building sooner than we would like.

Impact of School Buildings on Learning

Impact of School Buildings on Learning
Good facilities appear to be important to student learning, provided that other conditions are present that support a strong academic program in the school. A growing body of research has linked student achievement and behavior, as well as staff morale, to physical building conditions.

The Connected Real Estate framework
http://www.verticalcisco.com/FileStore/Education/Newsletter/World_Class_whitepaper.pdf
The Connected Real Estate framework is based on a secure intelligent information network using the Internet Protocol (IP) as a communication standard. This network is the same as the networks that are already used to connect many different types of properties around the world ?such as businesses, shopping malls, hotels and airports.
Until recently, however, integrating building systems with these networks was hampered by their use of different data standards and protocols. Usually, as shown in Figure 1, each building management function required a separate network ?costly in terms of installation, integration and maintenance. Multiple proprietary networks also resulted in buildings that were complex to operate and had limited opportunities for automation.
Education is undergoing a transformation to meet the needs of our information society and digital economy. ICT (information and communication technology) is playing a critical role in this and both the government and academic community have been investing in Electronic Campuses, developing digital curricula, and building richer and more flexible ways of learning.

Design your own classroom : online application
http://www.atschool.org/materials/classroom/buildaclass/
Design your own classroom with Teaching Matters, Inc.
This tool allows you to create an ideal floorplan and hardware setup for your classroom.
When you enter the room, use your cursor to click and drag these desks into place on the yellow floorplan, either in the arrangement you have currently, or a new desk arraignment you would like to try.
Position other furniture in the room such as teachers' desks, work tables, bookshelves and chalkboards.
Drag the technology elements from the inventory area into the classroom and position them where you think they would be best used.
Consider the following issues as you build: cost, accessibility, flow through the classroom, learning centers, security, and distribution of technology among students.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) Design Tools for Schools
http://www.epa.gov/iaq/schooldesign/
Indoor air quality (IAQ) Design Tools for Schools
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a critically important aspect of creating and maintaining school facilities. IAQ Design Tools for Schools provides both detailed guidance as well as links to other information resources to help design new schools as well as repair, renovate and maintain existing facilities. Though its primary focus is on indoor air quality, it is also intended to encourage school districts to embrace the concept of designing High Performance Schools, an integrated, "whole building" approach to addressing a myriad of important ?and sometimes competing ?priorities, such as energy efficiency, indoor air quality, day-lighting, materials efficiency, and safety, and doing so in the context of tight budgets and limited staff.
