Google Expeditions
Field trips are a great way for teachers to engage students and give them a first hand understanding of a subject — but they're not always practical or even possible.
Expeditions allows teachers to make their curriculum come alive by taking their students on field trips to almost anywhere they can imagine. Around the globe, on the surface of Mars, on a dive to coral reefs or back in time — abstract concepts come to life in Expeditions, giving students a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom.

Tripline
https://www.tripline.net/
At its most basic level, Tripline is a way for you communicate by putting places on a map.
That's a very human activity that has been happening for thousands of years. We've added a social layer to that communication so, whether you're a regular person or a rockstar, you can share where you're going, where you are and where you've been with the people you care about. That could be your family, your friends, or all of your fans on the web...it's up to you.
And just like in the movies, the Tripline player gives you an animated line moving across the map with a soundtrack.

The Bus Ride: Webrings 2.0
The Bus Ride lets users create and share collections of related web pages, based on a topic.
The Bus Ride acts as a kind of Webring 2.0, letting users create and navigate “routes,” collections of up to eight related links. When a user “rides the bus,” he is guided through each site on its route with an iframe containing a modicum of information and Facebook-powered annotations.

VoiceThread
https://voicethread.com/
VoiceThread is a free tool (in beta) that enables members to upload images, record accompanying audio commentary, and invite others to add commentary.
VoiceThreads are hosted free of charge at VoiceThread.com and can be embedded in blogs, wikis, and other types of Web sites. A VoiceThread is quick and easy to create, has plenty of space for numerous images and commentaries, and can be accessed by any Internet-enabled computer.
A VoiceThread can also be used to create a video tutorial. You can use the pen tool to draw lines and arrows on an image in real time as you are speaking.
"There are plenty of exciting educational possibilities with VoiceThread, especially in the humanities, fine arts, and foreign languages. In humanities classrooms students can analyze and comment on historically significant photographs and create virtual tours of places or events they are studying. English students can record their own poetry or short story and add evocative images. Photography and Drawing students can present their work and explain their techniques and motivations; students and teachers can then leave commentaries. Foreign language students can upload pictures from a trip and then explain their voyage in the language they are studying." (Tom Daccord)

Virtual Field Trip Guidelines

Virtual Field Trip Guidelines
Virtual Field Trips (VFTs) are one way the WWW is truly revolutionizing learning in the classroom. As someone who always has strived to provide meaningful experiences for my students, I love the VFT concept! Still, I have learned over time that VFTs require serious planning and consideration in order to make them a success.
Here's a set of practical guidelines based on experiences for preparing, conducting and evaluating VFTs with your students:

Get Outta Class With Virtual Field Trips
You look outside the classroom window and see yet another in a long string of gloomy days. Inside the classroom, restless students seem mired in malaise. It must be time for a field trip! No money, you say, for busses or admission fees. No time for travel? Then why not a virtual field trip? The Web provides the resources; you provide the fun. Every day is a beautiful day for a virtual field trip!
Have you ever taken your students on a virtual field trip? If not, you're missing a great opportunity.

Virtual Field Trips at i4c

Virtual Field Trips at i4c
Four decades ago one of my teachers took us on a field trip to see the plant where a children's aspirin was made. Why did we go? I am sure that I don't know. Perhaps we were being rewarded for good behavior. My point here is that before you consider a field trip, real or virtual, you should have firmly in mind what educational purpose the trip will serve. The first set of links will help you consider that portion of a field trip.

Developing Virtual Field Trips
http://www.virtualblackboard.com/
As teachers, we know that field trips motivate and educate our kids.
We also know they are time-consuming, difficult to organize, and often affected by the weather.
In many cases, the places we would most like to visit aren't nearby or aren't open at the time we are covering them in the curriculum. In these cases, the next best thing to a real field trip is a virtual field trip.
In fact, virtual field trips are often better because they take you places you couldn't otherwise go, for example, inside a volcano, under the ocean, or straddling a fault line.
