ICT Position Descriptions
School districts planning to hire additional technology staff, or reorganize staff positions often feel that it would be helpful to see model job descriptions that they could use in determining what they should include in their own. This Appendix will describe job responsibilities that may be included in position descriptions for the following types of technology support staff: school district level staff,
school building-based staff, teachers and media coordinators, out-of-district sources of technology support.

Three categories of Technical Support
- Overall management and strategic planning
- Set-up, systems administration and preventive maintenance
- Problem solving
Whilst the area of problem solving has the highest profile, the majority of technical support activities falls into the second category. In this area, many tasks are best carried out by on-site staff.

Framework for ICT Technical Support ('FITS')
The emphasis of FITS is on proactive tasks as well as reactive ones. It views technical support not just as a function responsible for resolving incidents, but as a service provider whose main objective is to prevent incidents from occurring in the first place. We see this as the ultimate goal of technical support and we aim to help you make it happen.

ICT Support Analysis Tool

ICT Support Analysis Tool
Becta have produced a self-assessment tool that enables ICT Technicians to review their skills and knowledge.
The ICT Support Analysis Tool allows users to take an institutional view of ICT support so that gaps and weaknesses can be identified. It is based on the same structure as the Competences Framework, but functions have been drawn together into broader tasks. Users are given the opportunity to select the provider employed for each of these tasks; a final report details the sources of support indicated for each task.

IT Job descriptions
What would be a reasonable guideline(s) to use when reviewing recommended job descriptions for various IT positions in a school setting? Not being a professional, how does one match job qualifications to various hardware, software and/or network responsibilities?

ICT Technician - Job Descriptions
http://acitt.digitalbrain.com/acitt/web/resources/pubs/Journal%2001/jobspecs.htm
ICT Technician - Job Descriptions
ACITT model suggests a proper career structure for technical support assistants in schools within a set of nationally agreed job descriptions and salary scales. The ACITT document distributed at BETT, and reproduced here, describes a range of jobs in primary and secondary schools from junior non-technical posts right up to network managers of large networks in large schools. The principle adopted is that the more difficult the job becomes and the more complex the tasks that have to be performed, then the higher the rate of pay.

http://www.becta.org.uk/techcomp/jd_tool_intro.cfm?sect=techcomp&refsect
ICT Technical Job Description Tool
The tool will present a series of groups of statements at four levels relating to each of the twelve sections of the Competences Framework. You will be asked to select a group of statements for each section and then be given opportunities to remove irrelevant statements or to add statements from another level.
This process allows you to create a flexible job description with statements drawn from more than one level in the Competences Framework.
You will be given an opportunity to edit the resulting job description.
