Some Foundations for Second Life Pedagogy

Some Foundations for Second Life Pedagogy
Second Life is a rich environment for empathy-provoking learning experiences of this sort. One might imagine "empathy islands" devoted to offering an empathic understanding of some issue or situation.
A course on the history of the Klondike Gold Rush might be greatly enriched by challenging students to undertake the journey to Dawson in Second life on an island that replicated the physics and energetics of the journey.
Without going into too much detail about this (which I couldn't do even if I wanted to), it seems to me that instructional design in Second Life must attend to three layers of design.
There is the logic or structure of the experience one wants to create, then one must attend to how learners will explore or move through this experience, and the fit between this experience and other social and instructional aspects of the course needs to be clear (enough) as well.

Implementing Second Life: Ideas, Challenges and Innovations
"In this issue of Library Technology Reports, virtual world virtuoso Joe Sanchez takes us beyond a mere exploration of Second Life and looks at the history of virtual worlds and how educators have used them as tools for learning in the twenty-first century.
Sanchez extensively and objectively explores the pros and cons of using second life for both educators and librarians, and a chapter guest-authored by LIS student Jane Stimpson examines several examples of public libraries who have established a Second Life presence."

A 'Second Life' For Educators
"I quickly realized that Second Life was a great place for educators to collaborate and share their experiences," she says,
"which is not something we have all that many opportunities to do. Here was a place where anyone could participate. You didn't have to be invited or submit a proposal. And if my district didn't have the money to send me places, I could just go into Second Life and learn great things."

Second Life lessons (News Article, The Guardian)
For some, the virtual world's learning opportunities start with the basics: keeping your feet on the floor
Sitting in the front row, I'm looking casual, cool and surprisingly female. I appear to be the first to arrive for the conference but am soon joined by a rather glamorous redhead. We sit in silence. Nothing happens except that her legs change colour occasionally - green, purple and back to normal, or what passes for normal in these parts.

Students vs Second Life
http://www.metaversejournal.com/2008/08/19/students-vs-second-life/
Students vs Second Life
When I started thinking about education in Second Life, and the reactions of students of university/college age to it, I rather naturally turned to think of my own experiences, and of ideas and prejudices I held as a student of approximately the same age.
Second Life is a place where the adventurous prosper and creativity is king – and being able to play in an open-ended way is a necessary skill. Educators need to accommodate their students by creating a somewhat directed environment for them to learn in, and then wean them off it and release them into the open.

Educational Uses of Second Life (wiki)
This is an overview of some of ways Second Life can be used, and in some cases, has been used for educational purposes.
See Further Resources at the bottom of this page for links to more examples and other resources.
We have interpreted the term 'education' very liberally, since, like in real life, learning can occur when 'education' isn't deliberately happening. We see all of Second Life itself as a learning environment. Also, many of the projects listed are not educational projects per se... but point to ways that Second Life can be used in education.
