8 Apps to Make You a Better Reader
How many books did you read last year? If your answer is more than one, congratulations: you're more well-read than about 25% of Americans over age 16, according to a 2012 Pew Internet survey.
Ironically, as we become more surrounded by words in the digital age, less of us are finding time to actually read them. The good news is that your smartphone or tablet can help.
Whether you'd like to read more, faster or some combination of the two, these apps will light your path to wisdom.

The Lexile Framework for Reading
http://www.lexile.com/findabook/
The idea behind The Lexile Framework for Reading is simple: if we know how well a student can read and how hard a specific book is to comprehend, we can predict how well that student will likely understand the book.
When used together, Lexile measures help a reader find books and articles at an appropriate level of difficulty (visit Find a Book ), and determine how well that reader will likely comprehend a text. You also can use Lexile measures to monitor a reader's growth in reading ability over time.

Doodle Splash : Online Interactive Tool

Teaching K-8 students to visualize what they are reading and to create graphic symbols helps them develop as readers. Doodle Splash interactive combines the process of drawing with analytical thinking about a text by pairing an online drawing space with writing prompts that encourage students to make connections between their visual designs and the text. The tool can be used for whole-class discussion of a short story (or part of a novel), small-group work, or individually, where students use doodles, symbols, drawings, shapes, and colors to construct a graphic of their story or chapter.
After completing their individual or group images, students have the ability to print out their final versions for feedback and assessment.

Readability Test
Gunning Fog, Flesch Reading Ease, and Flesch-Kincaid are reading level algorithms that can be helpful in determining how readable your content is. Reading level algorithms only provide a rough guide, as they tend to reward short sentences made up of short words. Whilst they're rough guides, they can give a useful indication as to whether you've pitched your content at the right level for your intended audience.

These lists have been developed for two reasons:
- for parents who have requested help in finding books at their child's reading level.
- for teachers who have requested a leveled book list or have asked for help in their effort to build a leveled library in their classrooms.
These lists are in alphabetical order by the authors' names and include two or three different sets of levels within each grade. Please remember that children learn at different rates for many different reasons. These lists are given as a way to choose books that will be at a child's level of development.

Whichbook

Instead of starting from the overwhelming choice of books available, whichbook.net starts from the reader, and enables each individual to build the elements of that elusive 'good read' we are all looking for but don't quite know how to define.
The standard way of organising books for choice, on shelves in a library or a bookshop, or on the web, starts from the products available - the authors, titles, publishers or genres. Using innovative software from Applied Psychology Research Ltd, whichbook.net enables, for the first time, the choice of book to start from the individual reader and what he/she is looking for.

Welcome to Keda Publications I have dedicated 35 years of my life, developing methods to teach people with reading difficulties how to read. During years of unpaid scientific research in the 1970's, I created a teaching system that provides a progressive solution to reading problems. I called this system Toe By Toe, as the learning stages are too fine to be called 'step by step'. Since it's publication in 1994, the Toe By Toe reading manual has taught over one hundred thousand children and adults how to overcome their reading difficulties.

Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)

The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) is a large international comparative study of the reading literacy of young students. Reading literacy is one of the most important abilities students acquire as they progress through their early school years. It is the foundation for learning across all subjects, it can be used for recreation and for personal growth, and it equips young children with the ability to participate fully in their communities and the larger society.
The PIRLS study focuses on the achievement and reading experiences of children in 35 countries in grades equivalent to fourth grade in the United States. The study includes a written test of reading comprehension and a series of questionnaires focusing on the factors associated with the development of reading literacy.
