Philippines to use Japanese technology for free Wi-Fi network
The Philippines will use technology developed by Japan to provide Wi-Fi access in parts of the country with lower connectivity.
Japan’s National Institute of ICT will provide a database (pictured) which will allow the Philippines to use unassigned television channel frequencies, known as TV white spaces, for Wi-Fi.
The Philippines is rolling out free Wi-Fi in 997 cities across the country, having tendered for the US$31.6 million project in March 2015.

Philippines ICT Master Plan 2011-2016
The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) released the Phillipine Development Plan (PDP) 2011-2016 on 30 May 2011 pushing for the long-awaited establishment of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
Apart from the creation of DICT, the PDP also outlined plans to maintain a pool of cybersecurity experts in government, facilitate ICT infrastructure investments in rural areas like Community e-Centres (CeC), and establishing a “secured data center and public key infrastructure system for government transactions to encourage the use of the e-government portal.

Philippine ICT agency abolished [July 2011]
President Benigno Aquino III has issued an executive order to abolish the Philippine ICT agency and transfer its function under a department as part of the programme to streamline government bureaucracy.
The new office will be named as the Information Communication Technology Office (ICTO).
