University Opens Virtual Classroom in Second Life http://www.campustechnology.com/articles/49280 New Orleans University Opens Virtual Classroom in Second Life
The university offers its courses on New Orleans Island, which sits on 16 acres of virtual real estate in the community. Currently.
In addition to course offerings, UNO's Second Life campus will support administrative and research needs, according to Merrill Johnson, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Eventually, visitors to the virtual campus will be able to browse through displays that link to the UNO library, admissions office, and brick-and-mortar offices of the university.
Second Life in Education: Dip, Cliff, or Cul-de-Sac? http://www.techlearning.com/blog/2007/07/second_life_in_education_dip_c.php Second Life in Education: Dip, Cliff, or Cul-de-Sac?
As Second Life has reach a point where many educators are now familiar with this virtual world and have even begun exploring it, the time is right to ask the question of whether or not Second Life in education is in the Dip, Cliff, or Cul-de-Sac.

Excellent Blog Posting
When I joined the group of educators in Second Life called the CAVE (see previous post) I promised myself I would do two things: 1) approach Second Life with an open mind and 2) write about it along the way.
I have written about it to some extent (another previous post, My First Second Life Lesson), but it still feels like I have a long way to go.
And finally, to gain any REAL insight and perspective, I needed to re-read more seminal works in this area. I’m still working my way through some and I’ve written about them at the end of this post.
The schome NAGTY Teen Second Life Pilot http://kn.open.ac.uk/public/getfile.cfm?documentfileid=11344 The schome-NAGTY Teen Second Life Pilot
This report provides a brief overview of key ‘findings’ emerging from the schome-NAGTY Teen Second Life Pilot.
There is extensive additional information about the Pilot on the schome community website www.schome.ac.uk
The Pilot set out to explore the educational potential and pitfalls of Teen Second Life, a secure 3D virtual world for 13 to 17 year olds. 149 students from NAGTY (The National Association of Gifted and Talented Youth) were provided with access to Schome Park (an island in Teen Second Life) which was intended to be used as an integral part of the the schome community website (wiki and forum).
These students were referred to as SParkers

Skoolaborate http://www.skoolaborate.com/ Skoolaborate
Stay tuned our Teen Second Life project has begun. A huge thanks to Linden Labs for making this possible and for their vision. Amazing that, in such a huge virtual world, a corporate organisation makes the time to support education.
I am Westley Field from MLC School in Sydney At MLC we believe that Global Citizenship is an essential and growing part of a rounded education.
Schools need to explore educational opportunities that will engage students and motivate them to learn.
Skoolaborate (a virtual collaborative space) and blog aims to bring together like minded schools from around the globe so that their students may share and learn from each other, in a virtual environment, through a variety of educational experiences. We hope that Skoolaborate will act as a vehicle that promotes Global Awareness and Understanding.
The island itself will house a variety of areas. Our home base will establish the culture of the site. It will house information about Global collaborative projects, the participating schools, the site itself, and news and information for visitors.
Not school - not home - schome http://www.schome.ac.uk Not school - not home - schome - the education system for the information age.
Schome will be an education system that meets the needs of society and individuals in the 21st century.
Schome will value and support people in learning throughout their lives (cradle to grave).
Schome will include flexible use of both physical and virtual spaces to support learning processes and enhance community.
The main focus of work on schome is currently on the use of Teen Second Life to give people 'a lived experience' of radically different models of education.
We are using Schome Park, our island in the Teen Grid of Second Life, to collect evidence about approaches to supporting learners.
The educational models we are using on Schome Park fit within the scope of the eSIR Reference Statement (Twining et al. 2006 Appendix 1) and draw upon a wide range of approaches to education evident in the educational systems in use in different countries and informed by prominent educational thinkers.
